You Are My Sunshine

There’s a cassette tape at my parent’s house with a recording of me and my dad singing together when I was about 5 years old. One of the songs we sang was “You Are My Sunshine,” and 23 years later, that song is still so appropriate. God truly blessed me with the best father a girl could ask for. We’re not the kind of father/daughter that are best friends, or even tell each other everything, but there’s no mistaking the unspoken, strong bond that we share. We’re both a bit reserved when it comes to opening up, but we share so many of the same personality traits that we can respect that about each other. I definitely got my stubborn streak from him, my independence, my humor, my reservation, and my fortitude. I look to my dad for security and wisdom, and I’ve never once been let down. He’s made countless sacrifices for me and our family that I know of, and probably a million others that I’ll never even know. But I appreciate it. I appreciate him and his love, his patience, and his guidance.

So,
From teaching me to ride my bike, to teaching me to drive the car
From pulling out my loose tooth to paying for my braces
From coaching me in softball to coaching me in life
From pride in my learning the ABCs, to pride in my college graduation
From driving me to my first job, to celebrating a promotion
From grounding me when home late from a date, to helping collect the pieces after a broken heart,
daddy, you’re still
my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You’ll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

Happy Father’s Day with an incredible amount of love.

I shared the same song with my father. I would sit in his lap and rest my head on his chest and listen to him sing. He still sings it to my nieces, it so sweet I almost have to walk away.
I became so mushy when I read your blog. Did you sing the second verse like this?
"The other night dear, as I lay sleeping, I dreampt I held you in my arms. But when I woke up I was mistaken, so I held my head down and cried."
Did he make that verse up?
