Nail Tips

On Saturday I received dating advice from the older Vietnamese man doing my pedicure:

“You a pretty girl, why you not marry?” he asked in his broken english. (Now there’s the million dollar rhetorical, apparently even international, question every girl *loves* to be asked.)

“You should go to bar, may meet nice man there. Or at work. Work better, men at bar may have family waiting for them at home. You spend time with some man at work and maybe marry him.” (Thank you for the tip. And hey, while we're exchanging advice, may I suggest you focus more on my O.P.I nail color and less on my dating life for *your* tip?)

He sounds just like my father! Funny, I get those same questions and comments when I go to get my nails done. Conspiracy against single women in the nail industry perhaps?

Is that the only English they learn – a girl asked me about a month ago when I was getting mani-pedi.
Girl: You married?
Me: No
Girl: Got boyfriend?
Me: No
Girl (not getting the clue that I don’t want to talk about it): why not?
Me: Don’t have time
Girl: You need make time.
Me: Oh OK (in my mind – OH the answer I’ve been looking for just make time and it will happen – yeah right – as if)
Girl: You don’t want to be old and lonely!
Me (now really depressed at 34): Yeah you are right.
Girl (laughing): Who am I to give advice I’m only 23
Me: Give Girl dirty look and stop talking to her!

Maybe he is my grandma reincarnated. She despaired that I would never marry. She went from..."go to church and meet a nice man to go to a bar...men are there. You aren't a lesbian are you? I mean you are 24 years old--what is wrong with you?"
