So Valentine's Day just passed us by and guess what? I had a good time being single. Yes, actually, I did. It's all thanks to my friend Sabrina who decided to throw a singles' Valentine's Day party. Everyone got along and had a great time. No one moped about being single. It was a great time to meet new friends and transfer our thoughts off of the over-commercialized day of "love." So, thanks, Sabrina! Great job!
I do, however, have a half-baked idea about who is the mastermind behind the creation of Valentine's Day. Hallmark? No. They just perpetuate the holiday to spike their sales. Here's my train of thoughts: Hopefully, Valentine's Day isn't the ONLY day that people in love celebrate their love (If so, then I feel sorry for them and would rather be single anyway). So, we can rule out that it was created to bring together lovers; therefore, ruling in that it must have been created to alienate single people. And why would we want to alienate single people you ask? Well, so they'll be more inclined to try harder during the next year to find someone to be with. And eventually procreate. And who would want to create a day to alienate single people for this purpose? Why, inpatient mothers and grandmothers wanting grandchildren, of course! :)
I'm really just kidding, but thought it was a nice spin on the obvious. I do get tired of having to answer the "when am I going to have grandchildren" question though. It's the cart before the horse. Let's start with finding a quality man and a first date. One step at a time. But, if you can relate to this situation, I highly recommend getting a dog. It's a great diversion for moms. At least you can show up for a visit with a "grand-dog" to take care of, and maybe avoid being asked that question every other time you visit.

I think you may have something there! The question is - is the need for holidays learned or instinctual? :)
